An orangutan who was one of the first apes to learn sign language died on 8 August aged 39. Chantek lived with an anthropologist in Tennessee, USA for about nine years, learning to clean his room, make and use tools and memorise the route to a fast-food restaurant. Later years were spent at Zoo Atlanta where he was treated for heart disease; Chantek frequently used sign language to communicate with the keepers. He will be deeply missed by his family at the Zoo.
