The winning numbers were generated by the Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment or ERNIE for short. The first ERNIE was built at the Post Office Research Station and introduced in 1957. It generated bond numbers based on the signal noise created by neon tubes. ERNIE 4 is in use today and ERNIE 1 has been displayed at the Science Museum in London since 2008.
