Reginald Alfred Varney born 11 July 1916 was an English actor, entertainer and comedian, best known for playing comedy roles. After taking piano lessons as a child he was good enough to find employment as a part time piano player, playing in clubs and pubs. During the Second World War he joined the Royal Engineers but continued playing as an army entertainer. After the War, Varney moved into television and was cast in the role of a foreman in the sitcom The Rag Trade, making him a household name. Varney’s most successful lead role was in sitcom On the Buses as bus driver ‘Stan Butler’, he researched the role well and even took a test to gain a public service vehicle licence so he could be filmed driving the bus.
