Southend Pier Fire 40th Anniversary Thimble

£7.95
On 29 July 1976 a fire destroyed the famous Southend Pier, the world’s longest pier. Strong winds fanned the flames making it hard for firemen to tackle the blaze from tugs in the sea and from the pier itself. A hundred people used boats and the train which runs the length of the mile and a quarter structure to escape. The pier had suffered fire before in 1959 with a fire in the pavilion and went on to suffer several more fires in years to come.
