On 2 June 1966 the United States landed its first spacecraft on the moon. Surveyor 1, America’s first attempt at a ‘soft’ landing was successful. The spacecraft landed at 06.17 GMT in the Ocean of Storms and just over half an hour later began transmitting photographs of the moon’s surface. The American President at the time, Lyndon B Johnson, used the occasion to emphasise the openness of the United States space programme. Contact was lost with Surveyor 1 in January 1967.
