Richard Branson Beats Atlantic Speed Record 30th Anniversary Thimble

£7.95
On 29 June 1986 Sir Richard Branson successfully set a new transatlantic speed record in the power boat Virgin Atlantic Challenger II. Averaging 36.79 knots and although he re fuelled 3 times he broke the previous record with a voyage time of 3 days 8 hours and 31 minutes. The trophy awarded for breaking the record is the Hales Trophy, commissioned and donated by British politician Harold K Hales in 1935. Branson however was not awarded the Hales trophy as the vessel he used to break the record was not commercial and this was part of the rules, although the record still stood.
