Norma Jean Mortenson known to the world as ‘Marilyn Monroe’ was born 1 June 1926. An American actress and model famous for playing ‘dumb blonde’ characters, she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950’s. While working in a factory in 1944 she met a photographer and began a successful modelling career which led to two short-lived film contracts with Twentieth Century-Fox and Columbia Pictures. By 1953 Monroe was one of the most bankable Hollywood stars, landing leading roles in films such as Gentleman Prefer Blondes and How to Marry a Millionaire and in 1959 she won a Golden Globe for the film Some Like It Hot.
