Butlins was founded by Billy Butlin in 1936 to provide affordable holidays for ordinary British families. The inspiration for his holiday camp came from an unhappy holiday experience on Barry Island in his youth. He opened his first holiday camp in Skegness followed shortly by Bognor Regis, Filey, Clacton and Minehead. Butlin’s is the home of the famous ‘Redcoats’, the holiday hosts providing entertainment and activities to holidaymakers. Many Camps closed down during the 80’s & early 90’s as the overseas package holiday became more popular.
