George Edward Cole, OBE was an English actor whose career spanned more than 70 years. He was best known for playing Arthur Daley in the long-running ITV comedy drama show Minder and Flash Harry in the early St Trinian's films. Cole was born in Tooting, London, and at 10 days old was given up for adoption, later adopted by George and Florence Cole. He left school at 14 to be a butcher's boy, and had an ambition to join the Merchant Navy, but landed a part in a touring musical and chose acting as a career. He was invested as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1992. His autobiography, The World Was My Lobster, was published in 2013. Cole died at the age of 90 on 5 August 2015 after a short illness.
