This black and white photograph taken of an American sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square, New York on 14 August 1945, has become somewhat of a famous icon, symbolising the end of the war in Japan. Although the war ended on 14 August when Japan’s surrender was announced, it is not until 2 September that the official U.S celebrations take place, this being the day that the signing of the surrender document occurred officially ending World War II.
