Considered to be the greatest author of the Victorian era, Charles John Huffam Dickens was born on 7 February 1812 in Portsmouth. His contribution to classic English literature is immense - from his pen came more than a dozen epic novels and countless short stories featuring iconic characters and a vivid depiction of 19th Century life. He died on 9 June 1870, and is buried in Poets’ Corner, Westminster Abbey.
